Challenger Baseball

The Challenger Division of Little League Baseball was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5-18 or the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Each player is encouraged to reach the highest level of play possible. Some players will require a "buddy" to participate in play, others will not.

An important benefit of participating in the Challenger program is the chance to socialize with school and community friends in a sports environment. All children, regardless of abilitiy, love the chance to socialize and most love the chance to compete with their peers. Managers and coaches may be parents or they may be other volunteers within the community. Many of the Challenger programs have enough volunteers within the community that mom, dad, and other family members can sit in the stands and enjoy watching their child participate rather than helping their child participate. It gives the family some much needed time out from the responsibilities of full-time care.

Challenger games may be played on either a regulation Little League dirt field or a synthetic/rubberized field.

There are currently 950 Challenger programs being played in 10 countries around the world. Over 30,000 athletes participate in the Challenger Division every year.
